| Miniature horses were brought to the US in the late 1800s and were originally used to work in mines. Standing no more than 34 inches at the withers, they are great for show, but are more commonly used as pets. Miniature horses can live as long as 20-30 years and are generally very healthy. Their feeding costs are pretty low compared to full-sized horses, normally costing no more than $20 per month. It's probably best not to ride miniature horses, but if you elect to try, make sure the horse is strong enough and isn't asked to carry much more than 50 pounds.
I've heard time and time again that miniature horses make docile and loving companions. Some are even used as therapy pets to be used with disabled children and adults. If you're looking for miniature horses for sale, or miniature horse tack, we have a number of resources available under the "horses for sale" and "horse supplies" link.
