Non-Sporting

Within the non-sporting group, you'll find dogs such as the Boston Terrier, Bulldog, Dalmatian, French Bulldog, Akita, Lhasa Apso, Poodle and Miniature Schnauzer. This group includes perhaps the widest range of different dogs. You'll find large dogs, small dogs, smooth coat dogs, rough coat dogs, active dogs and easy-going dogs. The only thing that brings this eclectic group of dogs together is that they're dogs - but more specifically that they're great companion dogs.

Many of us have fond memories of some of the breeds included in this group - from the Dalmatian that his traditionally been associated with riding on fire trucks to the Bulldog which has been a favorite of many consumer brand companies as they've promoted their products.

You really can't go wrong with many of these breeds. The few comments I have are to be cautious of the Dalmatian, as they are active and sometimes skittish. Be cognizant that the Akita is known to sometimes become overprotective of their families and property. The Bulldog is such a fun animal - but be aware that they can have certain health problems associated with the construction of their nose and their tendency to be overweight. The Poodle, miniature, toy and standard, is a more active breed than many people might know. When most of us think of Poodles, we likely think about them groomed and dressed up for dog shows. This is not the norm - these dogs are rugged and can be just as much fun as any other breed. Lastly, many friends and colleagues have been very happy with the Boston Terrier as a companion dog. They are a small size, don't require much exercise or grooming and are loving to their families.

COLD WEATHER PET CARE

As we find ourselves in the middle of winter, it's important to pay particular attention to our pets when they're outside.

IS PET INSURANCE WORTH IT?

With the rising costs of pet healthcare and with the extremes that many of us would go to for our pets, pet insurance is becoming very popular with pet owners.

PET ADOPTION: THE SMART CHOICE

Pet adoption is a fabulous option if you're seeking a companion animal. You'll be able to select from a wide variety of different breeds and ages as well as save a life.
