Things To Consider Before Picking Out A Dog

A dog can be a wonderful companion, providing unconditional love for years and years to come. Picking out just the right dog, however, is very important to ensure a match that will last. People who pick out the wrong dog very likely will find themselves wishing they had gotten a gold fish instead. The reality is that while almost all dogs crave love and affection, some dogs are better suited to certain people than others.

Fortunately, there is a dog breed or a mix of them out there to match almost every human personality type. From the actual physical characteristics of the dog to the behavior patterns most common, it is possible for a solid match between dog and owner to be made. For those who aren’t sure exactly what kind of dog to get, answering a few questions in a frank and very straightforward manner can help ensure a decent match in breeds:

  • What size dog do you want? This can be a trick question. While some people think bigger is better for protection, a small dog often fits the bill, too. If there are size restrictions due to a rental home or even a small yard or small living space, there are some great medium to small size breeds.
  • Why do you want a dog? Do you want a dog for companionship? Protection? For nothing more than to love? While almost all dogs are loyal companions, some are better suited for cuddling and others are more appropriate for guarding a house while its owner is away.
  • What do you intend to do with the dog? Are you looking for a lapdog? A guard dog? Do you envision yourself taking the dog out to jog? Hunt? Play?
  • What type of personality are you looking for in a dog? Do you want a dog that’s outgoing and playful? A fun-loving dog that would be good with kids?
  • How much time to you have to spend with a dog? Some dogs are more suited to staying alone while their owner is working; others require a great deal more attention.
  • How much patience do you have? Some breeds simply are easier to train than others.
  • How much are you willing to spend? Some purebreds can be very expensive. Mixed breeds, however, tend to be very affordable and can be great companions that provide love, affection and even protection.

Once these questions are answered, it can be much easier to find a breed or several that fit the bill. Most people will find there are many choices that are practically perfect, including both purebreds and mixed breeds.

It can be very tempting to pick out the first cute, cuddly puppy that’s found, but that can be a very big mistake for both the dog and owner. To ensure the best match, knee-jerk reactions and emotions should not be the only criteria.

Picking out just the right dog can take some time. When careful consideration goes into the process of picking, a good match can be made. It is important to weigh the options, understand the different breeds available and make choices based on more than emotions.
