Quarter horses are thought to be one of the first breeds of horses established in the US. Their name comes from their impressive speed over short distances - more specifically over the quarter mile. Quarter horses are strong, muscular horses. You'll notice that the quarter horse generally isn't as tall as other similar breeds, but makes up for this with its will and attitude. Quarter horses are well-liked by a wide range of people for their versatility and wonderful temperament. They have been very popular cow horses for hundreds of years and remain so today. Beyond that, quarter horses make an equally great recreational horse for trail and field riding.
